Matthews NC Bluegrass Festival and Chili Cook-Off
Historic downtown Matthews NC will be filled with runners, bikers, musicians and cooks on Saturday October 23rd. What brings all this activity to the town? The 6th Annual Bluegrass Festival and Chili Cook-Off in Stumptown Park. There will be fun for everyone on Saturday.
Bikers and Runners
Sponsored by the Matthews Rotary Club every year and co-sponsored this year by the Monroe Rotary on Wheels Club, the Bluegrass Festival will start at 8:30am with a bicycle ride through the town. Runners will leave Stumptown Park at 9:30am for a 5K race through downtown Matthews. A one-mile fun race begins at at 10:15am. The first 200 runners to register will get a commemorative T-shirt. Cash prizes will be awarded to female and male first, second and third place winners. In addition, all runners will participate as judges in the chili cook-off with free chili samples.
At 3:00pm, motorcyclists can join a ride through the scenic country of Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus and Stanly Counties.
Music and Food
Bring your chairs and prepare to enjoy bluegrass music in front of the band shell at Stumptown Park from 11am until 3pm. Groups performing on Saturday include Pinetuckett, the WBT Briarhoppers, the Far City Boys, and the Firehouse Cloggers. The Chili Cook-Off will take place during this time with at least ten teams competing for the top prize. Tickets for sampling the chili cost $5.00.
Proceeds from the Matthews Rotary Bluegrass Festival and Chili Cook-off benefit the Matthews Help Center, the Matthews Free Medical Clinic, the North Carolina National Guard Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund and Rotary International Polio Plus.
