Equestrian communities are hard to find in Matthews NC. If you are looking for a Matthews neighborhood where you can keep your horse, you should consider Windrow. Built in the 1970s and 1980s, Windrow was designed to be an equestrian neighborhood.
Windrow Estates was the first section of the neighborhood developed. Riding trails wind through the community. Lots are mostly an acre in size. The covenants and restrictions for Windrow Estates specify that properties abutting the equestrian trails may have a horse. The Matthews zoning ordinance requires one acre per horse. The combination of these two sets of restrictions means that you would most likely only be able to have one horse on your property in Windrow.
A drive through Windrow Estates in Matthews NC reveals homes built in the farmhouse-style, many with big wrap-around porches. The large lots allow for mature trees and landscaping. Residents of Windrow Estates have access to a neighborhood clubhouse, two swimming pools, a fishing lake, tennis courts and a playground.
The last part of Windrow that was developed is called Windrow II. Windrow II homes were built on half acre lots in the early to mid 1980s. This section does not have access to the equestrian trails or community facilities of Windrow Estates.
Windrow is located between Idlewild Road and Phillips Road near Hoods Crossroad Shopping Center at Matthews-Mint Hill Road. Historic downtown Matthews NC with its quaint shops, farmers market, library and numerous community festivals is just a few miles away.
