Kings Greenhouse in Stallings NC--A Favorite Spring Stop

I am an avid gardener and I live in Union County NC.  Spring is my favorite season and Kings Greenhouse is my favorite local garden center.Daylily

Kings Greenhouse is actually a garden center with a little history in the area.  Its history and growth over the years mirrors the growth of Union County.

The business was started in 1971 by Dot and David King on two acres of land in Stallings.  In those days, Stallings was a rural place just outside Matthews and a distance from Charlotte.  The Kings’ operation reflected the quiet rural area that surrounded them.  They grew vegetables and annuals in peat pots for sale to area garden centers.  They operated from December to May.

In 1989, Kings was purchased by the Leonard family and expanded to a year-round operation.  The inventory of plants expanded as well with poinsettias, annuals and perennials.  Union County began growing in the mid-1990s and exploded with residential growth after 2000.  The site in Stallings was converted to a strictly retail operation and the growing operations eventually consolidated at a wholesale facility in Monroe.

The original buildings and land at Kings Greenhouse have been converted for the retail operation.  The original house at the front of the property is the office, the garage is the check-out area, the propagation house is the gift shop, and the field beside the house is the parking lot.  The garden center still has the feel of a rural Union County home place.

Now when I visit Kings Greenhouse, I can browse through their extensive selection of shrubs under the shelter of mature pine trees.  I find the perennials at the back of the house and the annuals in a sunny spot behind the garage.  If it’s too early for the annuals to be outside, they can be found in several large greenhouses at the back of the property.  The garden center has 14,000 square feet of greenhouse space and 30,000 square feet of outdoor shopping area.  It has a great selection of plants and trees and is one of my favorite places to shop.

Kings Greenhouse is located at 524 Stallings Road, Matthews NC.

Monroe Connector Bypass Will Impact Real Estate in Northern Union County NC

Monroe Connector Bypass Will Impact Real Estate in Northern Union County NC

The Monroe Connector Bypass, a toll road that will provide an alternate route to US Highway 74, cleared another hurdle yesterday when a lawsuit against its construction was rejected by a federal judge.  This ruling clears the way for construction to begin in the first half of 2012.  Completion is expected in 2015.Road Construction Clipart

If you are considering a real estate purchase in northern Union County NC, you should know about this new roadway.  Running from US 74 near the I-485 interchange in Matthews/Stallings to US 74 between Wingate and Marshville, this 19.7 mile roadway will provide easier access to Charlotte and points east of Monroe.  It will also add traffic noise to neighborhoods that it passes by closely as well as more traffic to roadways where interchanges will be built.

Which roads will have interchanges?  The bypass begins at the western end with an interchange with US 74 in Stallings.  It then turns toward Secrest Short Cut Road with an interchange at Indian Trail-Fairview Road in Indian Trail.  The road continues around Lake Park crossing Secrest Short Cut.  It parallels Secrest Short Cut with interchanges at Unionville-Indian Trail Road and Rocky River Road.  The Monroe Connector Bypass than heads east with interchanges at Hwy 601, Hwy 200, Wingate and US 74 east of Wingate.

You can learn more about the Monroe Connector Bypass and see detailed maps of each segment of the road by visiting the North Carolina Turnpike Authority website.
