Charlotte’s Spring season is ushered in on the March winds.  Those brisk March winds also bring residents of Lake Park NC their annual kite festival.

The Lake Park Kite Festival takes place on Saturday March 17th from 10am to 2pm.  It’s held at Founders Park, a large level open space in the center of some of Lake Park’s residential areas.

I visited the Kite Festival a few years ago.  Brightly colored kites filled the air in Founders Park.  It was fun to watch families launch their kites with kids of all ages trying their hand at keeping the kites aloft.  A local kite-flying club provided kite-flying demonstrations.  The festival included other activities for children as well.

Lake Park is a small town in Union County NC that was developed as a master-planned new town.  The master plan included a number of opportunities for outdoor recreation in a series of parks, lakes and open spaces throughout the town.  The heart of Lake Park is the Village Green where ringing of the bells in the Bell Town greets visitors.  A community center with swimming pools, a water playground and tennis courts overlooks the Village Green.  Other parks, large and small, provide playgrounds, walking trails and opportunities for play and relaxation.

Where can you find the Lake Park NC community in March?  The answer is the annual Kite Festival sponsored by the Lake Park Homeowners Association.  Last Saturday the skies were bright blue and sunny and the cool wind was brisk, a perfect day in Lake Park for the festival.  Village residents converged on Founders Park where children of all ages tried their hand at kite flying.  The festival included demonstrations by a kite-flying club and other activities for neighborhood children.

The kite festival is just one of Lake Park NC community activities available to Village residents throughout the year.  Other events include village-wide yard sales in April and October, new resident socials in February and November, the Lake Park Fall Festival with rides and a band at the Town Center gazebo, and the tree lighting ceremony at the Lake Park Christmas Festival.

Lake Park NC was designed to provide spaces throughout the village for passive and active recreation as well as social activities like the community festival.  A series of neighborhoods of various types of housing and price ranges are separated by parks, small lakes and walking trails.  The Town Center in the heart of Lake Park has a landscaped park with bell tower and village green with gazebo.  The Lake Park NC Community Center is located in the Town Center.  It has two swimming pools, a water playground and two tennis courts.

Want to live in a small town where you can walk to the coffee shop, a park, a community center, your church?  If so, you must consider the Village of Lake Park NC.  The Village of Lake Park was designed by its developers in the mid-1990s to create a small town atmosphere where individuals and families in every life stage could find a place to live and the community organizations and amenities that enhance a small town lifestyle.  In the process, the Lake Park designers created Union County's most walkable town.

Some Things to Know about Lake Park NC

Lake Park is an incorporated village, not just a subdivision.

Incorporated in the late 1990s, Lake Park has a village council and Lake Park residents pay town taxes.  There is a homeowners association for the whole village and a separate one for the condos and townhomes.  The HOA fees for single family neighborhoods are minimal.  The post office that serves Lake Park is Indian Trail 28079 but Lake Park is not a part of Indian Trail.  Lake Park's population was estimated at 2854 citizens in 2007.

The Town Center, parks, playgrounds and ponds are within walking distance of Lake Park homes.

The Village of Lake Park is organized into a series of neighborhoods of various housing types including single family homes, condos and townhomes, and maintenance-free patio homes.  The Town Center is located in the heart of Lake Park with higher density townhomes and condos near the center and lower density single family neighborhoods radiating outward toward the edges of the village.  A series of green spaces with three parks, six playgrounds, and thirteen ponds thread through these neighborhoods.

The Lake Park Town Center has space for village commerce and social activities.

A landscaped park with a bell tower and a village green with gazebo dominate the Lake Park Town Center in the heart of the village.  Town festivals, such as the Kite Festival in March and the Fall Festival, take place at the village green. The Lake Park Community Center has two swimming pools, a wading pool and water playground, and two tennis courts.  Town Center commercial buildings include office space, a coffee shop, a restaurant and other small businesses.  A day care center, a private school, and several churches are also found in the Town Center.
